Description:
German composer Max Bruch received musical instruction from his mother, a teacher and singer, and showed a talent for composition from an early age. His first composition was a song, and it was also the last work he wrote during his long life at the age of 82. The 16 songs on this album were written over the course of his entire life, but he never adopted a twelve-tone or atonal style, and all of them are full of rich melodies and lyricism. The beautiful voice of baritone Rafael Fingerlos is on display. He sings delicate songs with his long-time collaborator, pianist Muisi. In "Songs of Sorrow," based on a poem by Paul Heise, the three other singers and the violin join in for an intimate ensemble performance. Naxos Japan
