La smithsonite doit son nom au scientifique britannique James Smithson, chimiste et minéralogiste.

C’est d’ailleurs son héritage qui a permis la fondation de la célèbre Smithsonian Institution à Washington.

Avant le XIXᵉ siècle, la smithsonite était souvent confondue avec l’hémimorphite et appelée calamine.

Elle a longtemps été exploitée comme minerai important de zinc.
